Fastener struggles

I had a cobbler add smaller holes to the leather strap and I am still trying to figure out how best to pack and close the bags neatly. Sometimes I just forget the strap and roll the top of the bag as it contains spills and protects even my boiled eggs when I stuff the lunch bag in another full bag.

This bag aims to re-define what it means to "brown bag it".  It's the right size for a variety of lunches.  It's easy to maintain and it's going to last a long, long time.

It was designed under three principles:

  1. We wanted it to have a unique, yet classic sense of style.
  2. We wanted it to be functional and durable.
  3. We wanted to make it as sustainable as possible.

Product dimensions:

Metric: 30 cm tall by 19.05 cm wide by 12.7 cm deep
Inches: 12″ tall by 7.5″ wide by 5″ deep

About our Organic - Petroleum Free - Waxed Canvas

We wanted to use waxed canvas because it looks great (especially with age), it's practical in that it repels stains (we're kinda messy) and it lasts a long time. However, we also wanted to use organic cotton canvas and didn't want any petroleum in the wax (that means no paraffin). It was hard to find either, so we had to figure out how to wax it ourselves using good old beeswax. In order to have a professional finish that was easy to sew, we did a lot of googling and even more experimenting (think mad scientist explosions). It took several months, but the results speak for themselves.

Why Reclaimed Leather?

We wanted to avoid virgin leather, but please don't feel judged if you eat cows, or use leather, we do too, but we figured - you gotta start somewhere - and this is how we did. After a number of trials, we settled on old horse straps and reins from a Mennonite farmer I met outside of Toronto. This current iteration includes old military gun straps, which add an awesome look and functionality.

Quote from Huff Post on why organic cotton is a good idea:

"What makes organic materials, like cotton, so much better than the conventional ones? Organic cotton is grown in a way that uses methods and materials that lessen the impact on our environment. A big effort in the organic movement is to use growing systems that replenish and maintain soil fertility and build biologically diverse agriculture. Organic cotton uses far less water too."

Quote from Cosmopolitan on why virgin leather is problematic:

"But it doesn't have to be this way. When it comes down to it, the cruelty faced by animals, the environmental degradation, and the awful working conditions of the poor who are forced to take up work in slaughterhouses and tanneries—the price we as a civilization are paying for a handbag or car seats is just too much. No matter how hard activists work, we will never be able to entirely stop the cruelty or the ecological damage."
