I came across a company in the UK doing something pretty incredible with a plant you might recognize... Cattails. Or Typha.
But before I get into what they're doing with it, let's talk about what's inside most of the warm jackets we wear.

A lot of the insulation used in outdoor clothing today is synthetic, mostly made from polyester or other plastic-based fibres. And that makes sense from a performance perspective. These materials can be lightweight, warm and durable.
But they're still plastics.
Which means we're relying on fossil-fuel-derived materials to make something we wear, wash and eventually throw away.
And just like other synthetic textiles, those plastic fibres can also contribute to microfibre pollution when garments are washed and throughout their life.
So what if we could get some of those same properties from something that grows?
Enter: cattails.
A UK company called Ponda has developed a plant based insulation called BioPuff, made from the fluffy seed heads of Typha.
Yes, the stuff that looks like nature's cotton candy.
It's not just about being plant-based. It's actually designed to keep you warm.
The fluffy structure of Typha's seed heads naturally traps air, which is exactly what you want from an insulation material.
Ponda processes those fibres into BioPuff, creating a lightweight insulation that can be used in place of some traditional synthetic fills.
A plant that traps air, keeps you warm AND can help restore wetlands? yes please!

Ponda isn't simply going out and harvesting cattails wherever they find them.
They're working with farmers to grow Typha on rewetted peatlands - land that was previously drained for agriculture. So instead of simply extracting another material from nature, the idea is to create a system where growing the plant can also help support the restoration of wetlands.
Restore wetlands → grow Typha → make useful materials → replace some fossil-fuel-based materials.
That's a pretty interesting loop.
Ponda has already worked with brands to bring BioPuff into real-world clothing and products. And we're here for it. ❤️
