The human brain is VERY energy efficient.
Apparently a simple human thought requires about one LED light's worth of energy - roughly 12 watts of power.
And how much energy is required for an AI brain to produce the same level of thought?
Roughly 2.7 BILLION WATTS.
Now, as the stock market continues to grow on AI dreams, everyday people are seeing their electricity bills rise in a similar, but less exciting way. Leading some, like Charles Hua, executive director of Powerlines, a nonpartisan organization which aims to modernize utility regulations and reduce power bills. to suggest that:
“Electricity is the new price of eggs.”
Meaning, utility costs are becoming a benchmark number upon which many tax payers are measuring the success of their local politicians.Which has led some municipalities to stop or postpone data centres in an effort to curb rising electricity bills.
Which is all very interesting to me because - as I said in a previous email - if you look at history, it seem that whomever controls energy, controls the future.
And in case you didn't already know, it appears that renewable energy is now cheaper than Oil and Gas.
And so the coming years are likely to produce a lot of tension between old and new school in ways that we haven't even considered yet...
