Observer Mandy (ma femme, ici en photo avec notre fils Hucky) s'épanouir dans son rôle de mère ces cinq dernières années a été un véritable spectacle. Elle est une force de la nature : elle fait des recherches, lit, s'intéresse à son fils et joue avec lui.
C'était naturel pour elle, mais trouver l'équilibre entre sa personnalité et son rôle de mère n'est pas chose aisée. Surtout à notre époque où les attentes sont si élevées. On attend souvent des mères qu'elles soient tout pour leurs enfants, tout en travaillant, en prenant soin de leur corps et de leur esprit, en soutenant leur conjoint et en trouvant du temps pour leurs amis et leurs loisirs.
C'est beaucoup, et pour notre famille, cette longue pause m'a donné l'occasion d'apprécier tout ce que ma femme a fait pour nos petits garçons (âgés de 3 et 5 ans) afin qu'ils deviennent des garçons et des hommes attentionnés et courageux.
Une grande partie de ce travail a consisté à sensibiliser les enfants à l'environnement. Mandy a trouvé des cours (si vous êtes à Toronto, allez voir le Pine Project , c'est génial !) ainsi que des livres, des jeux et des activités pour les guider vers une meilleure compréhension, un lien plus fort et une plus grande appréciation du monde naturel. Et je l'admire pour ça.

Ma mère a toujours été une fervente défenseure de l'environnement. Elle a toujours veillé à ce que je comprenne la différence entre ce qui était recyclable et ce qui ne l'était pas. Elle m'embarrassait parfois lors des pique-niques et autres événements en retirant le plastique des poubelles, et me disait qu'elle se fichait de ce que les gens pensaient d'elle ; elle agissait pour le bien de l'environnement. Chaque année à Noël, elle choisit un nouveau produit (pendant des années, c'était du papier toilette de septième génération) issu d'une production responsable, fabriqué à partir de ressources recyclées et, surtout, contenant peu ou pas de plastique, qu'elle offre à tout le monde. Cela a été des pailles en bambou, des sacs de courses réutilisables et du papier toilette. Chaque année, nous allons dans un camp familial d'environ 250 personnes et elle utilise son propre argent pour acheter à chacun des gourdes réutilisables afin de réduire le nombre de bouteilles d'eau à usage unique. Elle cherche constamment à être la plus éco-responsable et la plus économe possible. Après avoir surmonté la gêne de mon enfance, j'admire et j'apprécie aujourd'hui tout ce qu'elle m'a appris et la façon dont elle continue d'être une véritable championne, quoi qu'il arrive.

Ma mère a eu une influence considérable sur mon enfance et, bien qu'elle soit décédée, elle continue de m'influencer aujourd'hui. Fidèle à ses origines écossaises et anglaises, elle vivait frugalement, avec pour devise : « Utilise-le jusqu'au bout, use-le, répare-le ou fais-toi plaisir ! » Elle était d'une ingéniosité remarquable pour trouver des solutions à tous les problèmes, et je regarde chaque objet – surtout en ce moment avec la crise du coronavirus qui nous oblige tous à rester confinés – en me demandant comment je pourrais le réutiliser, le détourner de son usage premier, ou au moins le recycler en tout ou en partie. Cela a permis à notre famille d'économiser beaucoup d'argent en donnant une seconde vie aux objets et en évitant d'acheter des choses dont nous n'avons pas vraiment besoin. Et puis, il y a un avantage non négligeable : c'est un vrai plaisir de réfléchir à des solutions créatives !

Ma mère, Anne Cochran, nous a élevés dans les années 60 et 70 et était une véritable pionnière de la nature ! Elle avait toujours de petits projets scientifiques et nature en cours. Nous fabriquions des terrariums, faisions germer des graines et élevions des têtards (que nous relâchions bien sûr une fois transformés en grenouilles !). Nous nous levions la nuit pour observer les pluies d'étoiles filantes et avant l'aube pour admirer un essaim de papillons monarques migrateurs, blottis les uns contre les autres sur un arbre dans une ferme. Nous faisions d'innombrables randonnées dans les parcs nationaux et régionaux. À travers tout cela, elle nous a transmis son amour profond de la nature ! Elle nous a aussi sensibilisés au recyclage ! Déjà dans les années 70, elle était consciente des méfaits du plastique et nous expliquait comment et pourquoi nous devions l'éviter !

My mom has always been a champion of the environment. Made sure I always knew the difference in what could and could not be recycled, she used to embarrass me at picnics and other events but fishing out the plastic from the garbage, and would told me she didn’t care what people thought of her, she was doing what was right for the environment. Every year at Christmas she picks a new product (for many years it was 7th generation toilet paper) that is responsibly sourced, uses recycled resources, and most of all less or no plastic and gives that to everyone, it has been bamboo straws, and re-usable grocery bags, and toilet paper. Every year we go to a family camp of about 250 people and she used her own money to buy everyone re-usable water bottles to reduce the number of single use water bottles. She is always looking for ways to be the most Eco-conscious and conservative she can be. After I got over the childhood embarrassment I now admire and appreciate all that she taught me, and how she continues to be a champion no matter what.
my mom was a single parent for as long as I can remember. she was always there for us and always will be there for us. She was a great help when I was a single parent. I could not ask for a better mother.
My mom has been and continues to be consistent point of renewal in my life. She has taught me through her own boundless love, grit, humor, and no-nonsence compassionate action how to parent with grace and humility. I am a child of mud pies, art, and camping adventures. We did not have much money growing up so escaping to the wilderness and state parks is what vacation meant. My mom and dad both ensured my siblings and I understood that there was magic to be discovered in what was around us, which made us appreciate more and want for less. I owe a great many things to them as a duo, including my love and care for our natural world ❤️
At the base of her influence, my mom has always taught me and my sisters to care for others and realise the consequences of our actions. Whether it’s affecting people or the world around us.
She allowed me to grow my own love for nature (she loves nature and shared her love with us). She did this, for instance, by letting me help gardening and even helping me get my own vegetable garden – I just loved to create and help things grow. She saw a small spark inside me and helped me to grow this spark.
But the most important way she has influenced me, is that she always supported me and always believed in me. She listens to my frustration about the unwillingness of people to do something and then inspires me to keep on fighting for what I believe in – which means trying to inspire others to think about their impact. She is open to my suggestions for improving her impact (very enthusiastically even) and shares her knowledge with me as sometimes I forget to look at the impact on my body instead of the world. She supports me even (sometimes especially) when people think I’m crazy for spending more money/time because it’s better for the environment and the think I’m going crazy. She gets enthusiastic with me, she loves finding new ways to decrease impact. She is my rock, my support and my inspiration. She showed me to be strong and follow my dreams and passions by turning them into goals and she raised a woman that believes she can make a change in this world ánd she gave me the tools to get up and do it. And the best thing is, I always have someone to share it with.
Taking the lead from the blog post, I’d like to highlight the influence of my wife, mother to our three kids, on me and our kids to help protect the planet for our kids and future generations. Melissa is a graphic designer and artist who is inspired by the beauty of nature and pursues sustainability in her business and craft. After we had kids, some of her creative energy has been funneled into a passion to make our household as sustainable as possible. Through many hours of researching, she had worked hard in particular to limit the amount of plastic we use. It started with replacing our use of plastic wrap with reusable beeswax wraps and then moved on to switching to bamboo toothbrushes and upcycling old fabric to make reusable produce bags. She’s recently gone to the point of making the laundry detergent and dish soap for our home using starting materials that come in cardboard packaging to avoid plastic packaging. She’s a rock star! It may seem ‘unromantic’ to others, but I have given her sustainable products (including those from Etee), as birthday or holiday gifts. She’s always delighted in them because it encourages her in mission and communicates that I support what she is doing. Our kids will no doubt grow up to think that living the way we do is ‘normal’ thanks to the path that Melissa has set. Finally, as biologist by profession, I am someone who loves nature and already values conservation (through the encouragement of my own mom), but Melissa’s enthusiasm and persistence inspire me to keep improving in the ways I can help protect our planet.
I have to say I was equally influenced by both my parents to care for nature and the environment, but my mom was the one who helped me find solutions to environmental problems, including living more sustainably. When I was a teen she bought me a book for kids about going green, which was a guide to how to live in a way that was conscious of our planet. Ever since I have considered myself to be an eco-conscious consumer. Thanks mom!
