  • We have a flat roof, so it’s harder to install solar panels up there; but we get a lot of sun on our decks. This would be a great solution. I would certainly get balcony solar panels if 1) they don’t interfere with the way the deck is constructed (no building alteration required); and 2) they can be relatively easily removed to be cleaned/allow for cleaning on the deck, etc. 3) It would help if they were not ugly and plastic looking … a balcony is a thing of beauty and I wouldn’t want to interfere with that. The ones in the photos look fine from afar; what do they look like close up?

  • Yes!
We already have a solar array installed on our roof, & it’s been wonderful. Having an affordable method to help those without the means to do that would be fantastic. There’s nothing like opening your hydro bill & seeing only a $9/mo. administration fee!

  • This is a wonderful idea Steve. I am a home owner at the moment. Hoverver, as a retiree, which means I am an older gal, we will be selling our house in 4 or 5 years from now and intend on renting. Therefore, if the landlord permitted the installation of a solar panel on the balcony I am 100% for it. No matter what the future will be, you have my vote my friend.

  • Ditto most of the comments above. Great option, but no balcony or place with sun and outlet.

  • Fantastic idea. Unfortunately I live at the edge of the forest…. there is so little sun coming through that even grass doesn’t grow in my yard! I might get some benefit in the winter, but not sure the cost is justified then. So let me say I will take a wait and see approach.

  • I love this idea. I have solar panels on top of my house but would consider this as a backup for when the grid is down.

  • This is a really interesting idea. I would do a little more research on a wall plug-in before you make the investment. I have a small solar installation on my roof. I was told that the grid can only take and use so much energy and I’m sure the same is true of our in-home wiring. I live in Arizona where my solar panels provide more than enough power for my needs during the day for about 360 days of the year. But additional electricity on my wiring, or going back into the grid might be too much. Then again, it might be that the local power company is just trying to maintain their power monopoly, which wouldn’t surprise me. Can you find a university professor who is an expert on this topic and ask them? I would invest in one if it wasn’t too pricey and the PhD said it would (most likely) not burn my house down.

  • For sure! Great idea, so long as the cost doesn’t outweigh the savings.

  • Sounds great as long as I am able to afford it. (Ancient retiree living on little income but still in home)

  • Yes! We have solar panels and the savings are great, but there was a large upfront investment. These balcony panels are a great way to reap the benefits of solar panels without a huge investment. Europe uses these small panels to heat up water for their hot water tanks. I think its a great idea.
