5 Reasons Why (we think) this is the cleanest Cleanser in the World

cleanest cleanser - reason 1

1 - Clean Ingredients

All our cleansing agents are a 1 or 2 on the EWG toxicity scale, with antioxidant extracts of goji berry, ginseng, dandelion, lemon and cucumber, and ceramides to moisturize & protect the skin barrier.

cleanest cleanser - reason 2

2 - 50% Lower Carbon Footprint

Facial cleansers are 60 - 80% water, meaning we ship water all over the world, creating unnecessary emissions & plastic packaging. So we removed the water and created a concentrate you can add to water at home.
Ship cleanser, not water.

cleanest cleanser - reason 3

3 - Toxin Free Packaging

There is growing evidence plastic packaging leaches hormone disrupting chemicals. We removed the worry by creating our own packaging made of hemp, algae, natural waxes, oils and resins.

cleanest cleanser - reason 4

4 - Canadian Regulated

The Canadian government has a Cosmetic Ingredient Hotlist, including hundreds of chemicals prohibited from use, such as: formaldehyde, triclosan, selenium and 1.4-dioxane — all which are allowed in U.S. products.

cleanest cleanser - reason 5

5 - Zero Waste

Our cleanser is packaged in our own backyard compostable pods. Simply rinse, break the pod up and let it compost in your own garden or other home composting system. (P.S. Zero waste is a BS term, but you get the point).

Why are We shipping water around the world?

Why are We shipping water around the world?

...and why aren't more people talking about this?

Did you know that in 2021, the US shipped over 5 million imperial gallons of water across the country, for facial cleanser ALONE? That’s a lot of wasted emissions for something we have at home.

Let’s break down the numbers.

The average cleanser is roughly 5.2oz (150ml) and the first ingredient - at least 60% or 3.2oz (94ml) - is straight up H2O (water for those of us who get a little queasy with the periodic table). And 271 MILLION bottles of facial cleanser were sold in the US in 2021.

That’s a lot of water, which also leads to a lot of plastic to store all that liquid goodness.

Now, imagine if once every couple of months, you filled your own bottle with water, poured the remaining ingredients (2oz or 40ml), gave it a light shake and voila, you had a super high quality cleanser without having to create all those emissions OR associated plastic packaging? Makes sense right?

How Beauty's 'Dirty Side' led to THE DEVELOPMENT OF CHRYSALIS

How Beauty's 'Dirty Side' led to THE DEVELOPMENT OF CHRYSALIS

At 32, my wife (Mandy) saw a dermatologist to check on some sun spots that developed after years of sun without sunscreen and the occasional visit to a tanning bed (whoopsie).

Anyhoo, the dermatologist did some ‘tests’ - but I use air quotes because of this article from The Atlantic - The Pseudoscience of Beauty Products: “Many experts I found were not independent scientists, but dermatologists who also had a clinical practice and, as such, benefit (some greatly) from a thriving industry.”

And what did the tests reveal? That Mandy should buy a number of products from a company the dermatologist owned. And each product cost upwards of $200.

It really grinds my gears when when professionals take advantage of our greatest insecurities, so when Mandy and I launched etee (everything touches everything else) we made the following list to guide all product development decisions:

8 Dirty Things YOU Should Know about the 'Beauty' Industry (And popular facial cleansers)

beauty industry feature 1

1 - Most beauty claims are false

“Researchers at Valdosta State University in Georgia and the University of Nebraska-Lincoln analyzed 289 makeup, hair care, fragrance and skin care advertisements from April 2013 issues of seven fashion magazines including Vogue, Marie Claire and Glamour… Among scientific claims, 86 percent were considered vague (omitting important information) or false”. (CBS News)

2 - Liquid cleansers are too harsh for our planet

Most facial cleansers are 60 - 80% water. In 2021, over 5 million imperial tons of ‘cleanser water’ was shipped across the USA. This means we’re shipping water all over the world, creating unnecessary emissions and plastic packaging when we have water at home. Why aren't more people talking about this?

beauty industry feature 3

3 - US cosmetics are full of chemicals banned in Canada & the EU

“In the US it’s really a buyer beware situation,” said Janet Nudelman, director of the Campaign for Safe Cosmetics. “Cosmetics companies can use any raw material that they like and there’s no way to know if they are safe before they reach the shelves. The contrast with the EU [and Canada] is stark and troubling.” (The Guardian UK).

beauty industry feature 4

4 - Plastic packaging releases hormone disrupting chemicals

There is increasing evidence that not only is plastic packaging harming our planet, it may also be harming our bodies: "Phthalates are added to a dizzying array of plastics, to make them flexible [and] durable. They easily escape from these products as vapors or particles, and are found in the urine of nearly every American, as well as in blood, sweat, breast milk, semen and ovarian fluids." (New York Times).

beauty industry feature 5

5 - Most plastic packaging isn't getting recycled

20 billion units of plastic packaging are produced by the beauty industry every year, and despite best intentions, most of it cannot be recycled. “Since 1950, the beginning of large-scale plastic production, only 9% of the world’s plastic has been recycled. In recent years, more people have awakened to the truth that the idea of recycling plastic is largely a myth.” (Plastic Pollution Coalition).

beauty industry feature 6

6 - Most 'plant plastics' have similar problems to 'regular' plastics

Most plant derived plastics will not biodegrade in natural settings (they need to be heated in commercial composters), they’re not easily recycled and they often use food sources, like corn, thereby driving up the cost of these source materials in developing countries. (Smythsonian Institute).

beauty industry feature 7

7 - Plastic doesn't decompose, it gets old & becomes micro plastics

Plastic does not decompose. This means that all plastic that has ever been produced and has ended up in the environment is still present there in one form or another. (Plastic Soup Foundation).

beauty industry feature 8

8 - Glass packaging is not sustainable for single use items

While glass is unlikely to leach hormone disrupting chemicals, glass is much heavier than plastic, which can lead to increased emissions and it’s very carbon heavy to recycle (most glass containers are crushed up, not reused). While glass makes sense to reuse in the home, it’s not the best option for single use items.

We've waited 7 years to clean your face

We've waited 7 years to clean your face

We've worked with Canadian chemists and microbiologists, been featured on Good Morning America, interviewed by National Geographic, received a silver packaging innovation award from Dow Chemical and proudly served more than 300,000 customers.

But it hasn't been all sunshine and bunny rabbits. We've made mistakes - big ones - like getting kicked off Kickstarter, blowing up on TikTok only to disappoint customers with a backorder that could have been avoided, and having several 'failed' products before our break throughs.

It's been glorious and shitty all at the same time.

But we're proud of where we sit today and we're so excited for you to be a part of our next great adventure.

We built a Police force of Ingredients to clean up, Serve & Protect your skin

Cheesy metaphor aside, hydration is the foundation, providing protection from the invaders who want to take over your skin: wrinkles, age spots, dark circles, chapped skin and dryness. Our cleanser was developed to remove make-up and clear your pores, while providing PH balanced reinforcements to maintain and uphold your natural moisture barrier. In other words, it'll clean you up real nice without leaving you feeling dried out.

Goji Berry

If free radicals are robbing you of your 'youth' (okay, anti-aging is a BS term, but you get my point, free radicals can increase the signs of aging) then the antioxidant Carotenoids help 'neutralize' these intruders to BRIGHTEN the skin. Goji Berries are full of Carotenoids, so they are a key line of defense in our army of ingredients.

Ceramides

These captains of hydration are the reinforcements your skin needs to replenish and protect the natural skin barrier. In even simpler terms, ceramides are naturally-occurring fatty acids that help retain moisture in the skin.

Ginseng

Ginseng is like the undercover cop that works on the street to support collagen growth and maintenance, help improve skin tone and texture

Dandelion

Dandelion extracts are the beat cops with powerful antioxidants to cleanse the skin by removing buildup, neutralizing free radicals and balancing the skin's PH levels. And some even claim - it's the perfect skincare ingredient to treat acne - because it detoxifies, clears pores and prevents breakouts.
