As part of my civic duty (and to keep my neighbours and even wife happy) I've been keeping our lawn nice and trim.
Here's what it looks like on this mid-July day.
Now, if you care to walk five steps to the east, here is the section of my lawn that I am converting into a pollinator garden. NOTE: this photo is taken on the same day, same time.
Please also note, that as part of my civic duty I have not watered either my traditional lawn OR my 'pollinator lawn' in the past 8 weeks.
Now, before we go further into this topic, I'd like to share a story about provincial politics here in my home province of Ontario. You see, back in the 1990s, a new premier named Mike Harris was elected (for our American leaders, a Premiere is similar to a state governor) under the slogan of "The common Sense Revolution".
His platform was simple and clear: "tax cuts and a solution to the deficit." He also pledged to cut funding to social programs, reduce the number of MPPs, deregulate university tuition, and weaken unions with new labour laws. Although he wasn’t favoured in the polls, Harris and the Progressive Conservatives won 82 seats and 44.8% of the vote in 1995." (Bradburn, 2018)
Sound familiar?
Now, I don't know about you, but I'm a little burned out on politics, so I'm not going to get into a discussion about whether or not Mike Harris' common sense revolution was successful or not, but what I AM interested in discussing is what a great and catchy slogan he created.
And I think it should be adopted by all people who are wishing to turn the tide on climate change and species loss.
Because I think the environmental movement could use a COMMON SENSE REVOLUTION.
Here are my top 3 common sense solutions to our climate issues.
PROBLEM 1: The US alone has over 40M acres of lawns, which require a wild amount of time, energy and MONEY to maintain, which creates a whole host of issues for everyone. And unless you have kids using every square inch to play rugby, football or foot-ball... LAWNS MAKES NO SENSE!
COMMON SENSE SOLUTION: We should encourage people to naturalize their lawns (as opposed to fining them for naturalizing) and in turn aim to make urban city centres more naturally green so we can reduce the heat island effect (like Medellin Colombia who decreased their heat by more than 3C (5.4F)) and the astronomical costs of rapid flooding caused by not having enough vegetation to absorb increased storm water. And don't get me started on the loss of life we're seeing from increased flooding. SIDEBAR, Medellin's project not only reduced pollution, increased absorption and dropped temperatures, it only cost $600,000 US / year to maintain!
PROBLEM 2. Pesticides and herbicides are killing vital pollinators, potentially contaminating our soil and even our bodies.... IT MAKES NO SENSE!!

Controlling weeds by using chemicals that kill vital pollinators and potentially our bodies MAKES NO SENSE.
Grow a pollinator garden and control weeds by encouraging new growth of native plants rather than breaking your back trying to keep a pristine 'weedless' lawn - are you noticing my theme here?
Lobby your political reps to eliminate harmful pesticide use. There are more of 'us' than there are of 'them' (meaning the multi-nationals who are responsible for these products) and together we can find ways to protect crops without relying on these old-school methods.
